The World and its mother…..
Galway’s Port city was the backdrop for the Residential cruise ship THE WORLD for the 8th and 9th July 2013 where not only the sunshine came out to see the ship, but all of Galway!
It was a tremendous 2 days to be able to welcome this majestic ship into our BLUE PLAYGROUND, Galway Bay and for its passengers to witness the charm and literally the warmth of the medieval city. Many onboard guests were keen to visit St Nicholas Church when Christopher Columbus had prayed and Lynch’s Window where the then mayor of Galway sentenced his own son to death in 1493.
Ashford Castle, Cnoc Suain, Kylemore Abbey were some of the hot spots visited during the two day port call while others hired cars and ‘did their own thing’ and some just strolled into the city, jogged the Salthill Promenade and being able to keep an eye on their ‘residence’ on the bay.
Galway Harbour Master, Captain Brian Sheridan said the arrival of this high profile ship was the zenith of the vision to bring the cruise ships to Galway and was the result of hard work by the port company”. The Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity had confirmed to 2014 & 2015 and this was a very strong statement from a high end cruise company that Galway had just what the cruise passenger relished, he added.
P&O Cruises had recently confirmed Galway as a port of call in 2014 and this too signalled that Galway had positioned itself to welcome cruise ships to Ireland’s most western port.
Companie du Ponant’s new ship Le Soleal is due into Galway on the 18th July when Galway will open its arms to greet and welcome this ship on her maiden cruise and let’s hope the sunshine will also come out to see her on Galway’s Galway Bay.
