Sailor of the Month - Martin Breen

The Irish Independent has named Galway’s own Martin Breen as June’s Sailor of the Month.  Martin Breen, an accomplished sailor was winner of the Dun Laoghaire to Dingle yacht race onboard Galway Harbour, a Reflex 38.  Galway has fared pretty well in that particular race with four Galway wins in its ten year history.

The branding of the Reflex 38 to “Galway Harbour – The Blue Playground” is in keeping with the port company’s overall strategy to promote the ‘softer’ values of ports by supporting water sport events both here in Galway and nationally said Harbour Master, Captain Brian Sheridan.  “We have a wonderful amenity that is Galway Bay, we need to utilise this more and provide improved access to the sea where possibe.  The opening of the Galway Ocean Sports Club in 2010 has given added energy in positioning Galway as a guiding light in all things nautical in Galway.”

The port company is on the cusp of lodging its long running plans for the new port.  This plan will address all the issues of commercial shipping, marine tourism (cruise liners) and marine leisure.

Galway Harbour  -The Blue Playground is doing its part along with Martin Breen in keeping the focus of sailing in the West in advance of Ireland’s stopover in Galway of the Volvo Ocean Race in July 2012.
